چکیده

Magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling is achieved primarily through magnetic field-aligned currents. Such currents are difficult to measure directly and are usually inferred from satellite magnetometer recordings or from groundbased measurements of the divergence of ionospheric electric fields. The latter technique requires a knowledge of the ionospheric conductance distribution. Although it is possible to obtain the ionospheric electric field distribution over large spatial areas with good temporal resolution from coherent backscatter radars, these instruments cannot measure conductivity. Since the equation for computing field-aligned currents explicitly requires the gradient in conductance to be known, the use of statistically averaged models is excluded for case studies. If a dense enough array of magnetometers is available, these data may be used in combination with radar data to produce a measured conductance distribution within the overlapping fields of view. This has been done for data obtained in northern Scandinavia. Comparing field-aligned currents, computed with and without knowing the ionospheric conductance distribution, shows that gradients in conductance can not be ignored, even for quiet geomagnetic conditions.

Convective heat transfer enhancement of the Water-based magnetite nanofluids in the presence of a 3-D low-intensity magnetic field

In the current investigation, Fe3O4 water-based nanofluids were synthesized to examine the effect of an alternative 3-D external magnetic field on its thermal behavioral pattern. A solvothermal method was used to prepare the magnetite nanoparticles. To characterize the nanoparticles, the study employed transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform ...

Electromagnetic Field Due to Lightning Strikes to Mountainous Ground

The produced electric and magnetic fields due to lightning strikes to mountainous ground are determined in this paper. For the sake of simplicity a cone-shaped ground with finite conductivity is assumed to represent a natural nonflat ground. By this assumption, we deal with an axillary symmetrical structure so we use the cylindrical 2D-FDTD to save the simulation memory and time, dramatically. ...

Including gap region field‐aligned currents and magnetospheric currents in the MHD calculation of ground‐based magnetic field perturbations

[1] Many high‐latitude modeling studies utilize the horizontal ionospheric Hall current in calculating ground‐based magnetic perturbations, but low‐latitude and midlatitude studies should include current systems such as the magnetospheric, field‐aligned, and Pedersen currents. Recently, by including all these current systems, a more precise ground‐ based perturbation calculator has been impleme...

Investigation of internal pressure gradients generated in electrokinetic flows with axial conductivity gradients

Field amplified sample stacking (FASS) is used to increase sample concentrations in electrokinetic flows. The technique uses conductivity gradients to establish a non-uniform electric field that accumulates ions within a conductivity gradient, and can be readily integrated with capillary electrophoresis. Conductivity gradients also cause gradients in near-wall electroosmotic flow velocities. Th...
